Dad Knows Best

Since yesterday was my Dad's birthday, I spent some time thinking about him and some family memories.

One fun memory was of the time when we had a boat. I believe it was a Larson and it had teal markings on it. I used to look forward to the couple of weeks or month that my family would rent a cabin on Lake Champlain in South Hero and once we had the boat, that added a new excitement to going there. Back then Dad was all excited about having the new boat, but very nervous, too. The waves had to be at just the right level...nonexistent... for him to want to take the boat out on the water. We (my brother and I) used to get so mad when Dad would say we couldn't take it out because there were waves. On those clear days when the water was glassy, we did have a lot of fun. We made friends with another family of boaters who had named their boat "Strange Crew". We used to meet them out in the lake near Butler's island and put our anchors out, hook our boats together and have a little party. I LOVED diving off the boat into the water near the island. It was sandier there than the weedy water near camp. I also looked forward to the picnics on the water with our friends.

The other time I was thinking about yesterday was a time when I learned the lesson that Dad knows best. My brother and I decided one day that we wanted to go skiing. We decided to team up and beg my dad to take us. He said no. We then decided to try to get our mom on our "team". For some reason on this day, she must have really wanted to go skiing, too and she joined forces with us. Well, "against his better judgement" we went to Bolton ski resort...and it was a fun time skiing...but on the way home we were in a serious car accident. Nobody was hurt, but we were hit by this lady and sent over a steep embankment totalling the car. Later, we all remembered that Dad had said no and we had made the trip against his better judgement. Gulp.

So, now when I think back about those days when we didn't take the boat out, I'm glad that even though I was disappointed, we did what Dad thought was best.
